The jackpot in the Virginia Lottery’s Cash 5 with EZ Match game was higher than ever when Bryan Vaughan decided to get in the game.

The Midland man bought a ticket for the Nov. 9 drawing, at the Garrisonville Road Wawa in Stafford. Vaughan had initially intended to buy a scratcher ticket but decided to play Cash 5 with EZ Match instead.

One of those tickets ended up winning the record-setting $1,381,071 jackpot.

“I’m still in disbelief,” Vaughan told Virginia Lottery officials as he claimed his prize. “I want to take this slow, and I want to do the right things with it.”

He matched all five winning numbers, 1-4-16-29-42, with the winning ticket.

Cash 5 with EZ Match features a rolling jackpot, starting at a minimum of $100,000. The odds of matching all five numbers to win the jackpot are 1 in 749,398.

In addition, a player who spends an extra dollar for EZ Match receives five randomly generated numbers with a prize of up to $500 associated with each number. If those numbers match any of the numbers on the ticket for the drawing, the player wins that prize – even before the drawing is held.

All Virginia Lottery profits go to K-12 education in Virginia. Vaughan lives in Fauquier County, which received more than $3.9 million in Lottery funds for K-12 education last fiscal year. In Fiscal Year 2023, the Lottery raised more than $867 million for K-12 education, making up approximately 10 percent of Virginia’s total K-12 school budget.
